The Magpie Does It Again! Another Jowett Javelin Joins the Nest

Well, folks, you know how it goes. Just when you think you've seen every barn find and every hidden gem, "The Magpie" swoops in with another incredible tale. And this time, it's a beauty: a genuine Jowett Javelin, pulled from 40 years of slumber and destined for a new lease on life!

We've said it before, and we'll say it again: The Magpie has an uncanny knack for unearthing the most fascinating automotive treasures. It’s not just about finding cars; it’s about discovering stories, preserving history, and bringing these magnificent machines back into the light after decades of darkness. This latest find, hidden away since the mid-1980s, is no exception.

Four Decades in the Dust: The 40-Year Sleep

Finding a classic is one thing, but finding a car that hasn't seen a public road since the era of synth-pop and shoulder pads is another entirely. This Javelin didn't just sit; it was entombed for 40 years in a dry, quiet barn, shielded from the elements but forgotten by time.

When the Magpie first cracked open the barn doors, the air was thick with the scent of aged oil and old hay. There she was, draped in a heavy shroud of dust that had been settling since the Reagan era. To see a car emerge after 40 years of storage is a religious experience for any petrol head. It’s a literal time capsule where the clock stopped forty years ago.

Unrivaled Provenance: A Paper Trail Through Time

What truly sets this find apart is the incredible "paper nest" that came with it. It is vanishingly rare to find a 40-year barn discovery that still carries its entire life story in a folder. This Javelin comes with a staggering amount of original provenance, documenting its journey from the showroom floor to its long hibernation.

The history file is a treasure trove for any historian:

  • The Beginning: Includes the original order forms and correspondence from George Newman & Co. (Brighton) Ltd. dating back to May 1947.
  • The Handover: The original 1949 purchase invoice and the restrictive Covenant deed signed by the first owner, Mrs. A. Ward.
  • Protection: Original insurance policies and cover notes from The Motor Union Insurance Company and The Dominion Insurance Company.
  • Maintenance and Care: A complete set of vintage literature, including the original Maintenance Manual, the Javelin Instruction Book, and "The Book of the Jowett Javelin" from Pittman’s Motorist’s Library.
  • Service History: An extensive collection of service records and inspection reports from the 1950s and 60s, documenting everything from engine tests to brake adjustments.
  • Official Records: The original logbook showing tax stamps through the decades and various Ministry of Transport test certificates.

The Tale of the Javelin

This particular Javelin looks like it's been tucked away for a fair while because it has! Just look at it: the classic "fastback" lines, the distinctive low bonnet, and those fabulous rear-hinged "suicide doors" hinting at the unique engineering within.

The Magpie had been tipped off about an unusual car sitting patiently in a rickety old barn. A persistent rumor, a faint whisper in the classic car community about a "forgotten 40-year-old secret," was all it took to spark the hunt.

Ahead of Its Time

The Jowett Javelin, designed by the legendary Gerald Palmer, was truly ahead of its time. Even after 40 years in a barn, you can see the genius in its design. With its innovative flat-four boxer engine and excellent handling, it was a genuine performer, even clinching class victories at prestigious events like the Monte Carlo Rally.

  • The Engine: 1.5-litre flat-four (boxer) for a low center of gravity.
  • The Look: The first British production car with a curved windscreen.
  • The Pedigree: A rally-winning chassis in a family-car body.

On the Trailer and Headed for Home

The journey from forgotten relic to future showstopper has officially begun. The original black paint, hidden under four decades of grime, and the weathered but complete interior all tell a story, a testament to the long years of storage. It’s rare to find a car this original, untouched by modern hands for nearly half a century.

This Javelin will now join the growing collection of rescued classics. Stay tuned, Magpie fans, as we wake this beauty up from its 40-year nap!
