This Shell-Mex petrol pump globe is one of the most iconic symbols of British motoring history. Shaped in the form of a scallop shell with bold red “SHELLMEX” lettering, this glass globe represents the golden age of roadside petrol branding from the 1930s to the 1950s.

Product Details

Historical Background

The Shell-Mex brand was formed in 1932 after the merger of two of Britain’s most significant oil companies: Shell and the British Petroleum Company. The merger created Shell-Mex and BP Ltd, a joint marketing organisation that operated fuel distribution across the UK until 1976.

During this era, petrol stations were transforming from simple roadside pumps to stylish service points, and illuminated glass globes like this one became essential branding features. The Shell-Mex globe, with its instantly recognisable scallop shell shape, symbolised quality, trust, and modern motoring convenience.

These globes were mounted atop petrol pumps and lit from within, glowing brightly at night to guide drivers toward refuelling stations. They not only advertised the brand but also became a reassuring emblem of reliability for generations of motorists.

Design and Features

The design of this Shell-Mex globe reflects the company’s long-standing association with the scallop shell motif, originally inspired by the natural form of the Pecten shell. The raised lettering and fluted shell detail were meticulously crafted to capture and diffuse light beautifully when illuminated.

Made from heavy milk glass, this design stood out from more common round globes of the time and became one of the most distinctive symbols in petroliana history. The red lettering contrasts perfectly with the clean white shell, embodying Shell’s early marketing slogan “You can be sure of Shell.”

Collectibility

Shell-Mex globes are among the most desirable and recognisable pieces of petrol memorabilia. Their elegant design, strong brand identity, and historical significance make them highly prized by collectors.

Due to their fragile glass construction, many were broken or discarded when service stations modernised in the 1960s and 1970s. Surviving examples in this condition are now considered rare and valuable, especially those with sharp lettering and original sheen.

Summary

This Shell-Mex petrol globe is more than a piece of advertising—it’s a shining symbol of the early motoring era, when design and engineering came together to create lasting icons of British road culture.
