Historical Background

The National Benzole Company was founded in 1919, originally set up to market benzole (a coal-tar derivative) as an alternative to petrol. In the years immediately after the First World War, petrol shortages in Britain led to the use of benzole as a motor fuel. NBC capitalised on this opportunity, creating one of the earliest recognisable petrol brands in the UK.

By the mid-1920s, National Benzole adopted its now-famous branding: the yellow-and-black colour scheme and the "Mercury Head" logo, representing speed, efficiency, and modernity. This striking visual identity made National Benzole one of the most recognisable names on the road.

In the 1930s and 1940s, the company expanded into lubricants and motor oils, producing branded containers and display racks such as this one. These metal holders were commonly found on petrol forecourts or in motor workshops, used to store and showcase glass oil bottles filled with National Benzole lubricants.

After the Second World War, the company continued to thrive, and in 1957 it merged with Shell-Mex and BP to form a joint marketing operation. Despite this merger, the National Benzole brand remained active for decades, with its distinctive colours and logo enduring into the 1970s and 1980s.

Design and Features

This display rack features the classic NBC branding, including the winged emblem with “NBC” lettering and the words “National Benzole Company Limited” in bold text. The yellow paint and black lettering were chosen for their strong visual contrast and association with the brand’s identity.

The rack’s construction from durable tin would have allowed it to withstand years of service station use. Each slot held an individual glass oil bottle, typically marked with the NBC logo and used for dispensing measured quantities of motor oil to customers.

Today, surviving examples of these display units are highly sought after by collectors of vintage petroliana for their authentic patina, bold design, and connection to early 20th-century motoring culture.

Collectibility

Original National Benzole items are prized by enthusiasts of classic garage memorabilia. Displays like this one are increasingly rare, as many were scrapped or repainted when petrol branding changed in the 1960s. Its aged finish and original graphics make it a standout piece for display in a vintage workshop, motoring collection, or man cave.
