Historical Background

The MG TD succeeded the much-loved MG TC in 1950, and while it retained the spirit of its predecessor, it introduced significant advancements that made it more refined and usable. Built by the MG division of the Nuffield Organisation, the TD combined the proven XPAG engine from the TC with a new chassis derived from the MG Y-type saloon.

This new setup brought independent front suspension with coil springs, rack-and-pinion steering, and a wider track, giving the TD vastly improved ride comfort and handling. The car also adopted smaller 15-inch disc wheels instead of the older wire types, improving stability and road holding.

Although traditionalists initially criticised the TD for its more modern comforts, such as bumpers and an updated dashboard, the car was a sales success, especially in export markets. Around 80 percent of production went overseas, with the majority sold in the United States, where it became a favourite among American servicemen returning from Europe after World War II.

Design and Features

The MG TD retained the timeless prewar roadster silhouette that made MG famous: sweeping wings, a tall upright grille, separate headlamps, and a folding windscreen. Despite its traditional appearance, it was more sophisticated under the skin, offering better ergonomics and driving refinement.

The cockpit featured a charming combination of leather seats, polished wood trim, and simple but elegant instrumentation.
