Historical Background

Cleveland Petroleum was one of the early independent oil companies that flourished in Britain during the interwar years. The company took its name from the Cleveland district of Yorkshire, a region long associated with the petroleum trade and industrial progress.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Cleveland promoted its fuels and oils as “Guaranteed” to emphasise quality and consistency at a time when motorists were still learning to trust branded petrol. Petrol globes like this one sat atop pumps and were illuminated from within, making them visible from the roadside both day and night.

The introduction of electric lighting on pumps transformed garage forecourts into bright, welcoming spaces for travellers, and companies like Cleveland used these eye-catching glass globes to establish strong brand recognition.

Design and Features

The Cleveland Guaranteed globe stands out for its clean Art Deco influence and striking use of colour. The embossed lettering gives depth to the glass, while the diamond form added distinction from the more common round globes of the period.

Each globe was hand-made from pressed milk glass, designed to glow softly when lit, casting a warm light that enhanced the red and blue colours. These designs were as much about art and identity as they were about advertising, reflecting the pride of early fuel companies in their products.

Collectibility

Original Cleveland Petrol globes are now highly desirable among collectors of automobilia and garage memorabilia. Their combination of rarity, craftsmanship, and nostalgic design makes them a centrepiece item for any vintage petroliana display.

Due to their fragile glass construction, many globes were broken or discarded when service stations modernised during the 1950s and 1960s. Surviving examples in good condition, such as this one, are now considered premium collector’s pieces.

Summary

This Cleveland Petrol globe represents a bygone era of craftsmanship and charm, when petrol stations were local landmarks and every brand took pride in its image. A genuine piece of motoring heritage, it captures the spirit of travel, reliability, and design from Britain’s early automotive age.
